Altaba to sell part of Yahoo Japan stake to Softbank for $2 billion
Altaba Inc. , the holding company that used to be Yahoo Inc., announced Monday afternoon that it will sell about a third of its remaining stake in Yahoo Japan to the other large stakeholder in the Asian asset, Softbank Group Corp. Altaba said that Softbank had agreed to buy 613,888,888 share of Yahoo Japan for $3.26 a share, about $2 billion in total. Altaba would still hold about 1.36 billion shares in Yahoo Japan if they sell all the shares, though Japanese law requires that Softbank make an open tender that allows for any Yahoo Japan shareholder to sell shares to Softbank in the tender offer. Yahoo Japan, however, has launched a concurrent buyback offer that seeks more than 600 million shares. Altaba and Softbank also terminated their joint venture agreement that gave the two Yahoo Japan owners stated rights, though Altaba retained some rights regarding extraordinary transactions. Altaba has been looking for ways to cash in on some of the investments that remain in the Zombie Yahoo's coffers, mostly its stake in Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. , but are having trouble convincing investors to take advantage. Altaba said this move had no effect on the other tender offer it has made. Altaba shares closed 0.3% higher Monday and added another 0.5% in late trading after the announcement was made. Alibaba's most bullish analyst reiterates outlook, while tweaking revenue estimates
Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.'s most bullish analyst reiterated his view, even though he had to trim near-term revenue expectations given the delay in the Ele.me consolidation. Susquehanna Financial's Shyam Patil kept his rating at positive and his stock price target at $305, which is 63% above Thursday's closing price of $186.88, and the highest target among the 47 analysts surveyed by FactSet. The stock edged up 0.1% in premarket trade Friday. Patil now expects fiscal first-quarter revenue to rise 61.5%, down from previous estimate to 63.0% growth, because the consolidation of the Ele.me food-delivery platform "occurred mid-quarter vs. previous expectations for a full quarter on the books." Meanwhile, Patil raised his digital media revenue estimate, citing Youku's World Cup streaming rights, which "should be a tailwind for new subscriber additions" for the next several quarters. We continue to view [Alibaba] as the China e-commerce category killer with several years of strong growth ahead," Patil wrote in a note to clients. The stock has rallied 31.4% over the past 12 months through Thursday, while the S&P 500 has gained 13.6%.Market Pulse Stories are Rapid-fire, short news bursts on stocks and markets as they move.
